Sooo basically the main reasons behind it are that a solar year…which is the earth going around the sun..is 365 and a quarter days long. So I know that is 1/4 day extra is all…we generally just round up but eventually those part days add up…in the long run if we did not do it this way then wayyy down the road the July August months…would be in the winter around here….so for us that would mess up schooling etc….hmmm of course then it would be different for Australia ….so we do this to keep things on an even keel so we can plan.
Julius Caesar began the new calendar called the Julian calendar that added a day every four years….there was a slight issue with that if you dig deeper….you can find that he found the extra day to be a little more exact than it actually was…each year was not quite six hours extra but five hours and 49 minutes…so his calendar eventually added a few too many days….
We then found a slightly more exact calendar with the Gregorian calendar that we use today…It began to be widely used in 1752…Whew! Crazy..It is something I never thought of. We are so lucky to have it all organized now for all of us!! We can just now plan and enjoy!!
