The Theme for this year’s celebration is ‘DigitALL Innovation and Technology for gender equality.’
This year’s theme from the UN is to recognize the contributions women and girls are making to technology and online education. There are many themes around and this year some of those are to “Embrace Equity” and challenge gender stereotypes and focus on inclusion.
International Women’s day began in the early 1900’s. In 1908 with the women’s suffragette movement there was a group of 15,000 women who marched in New York City and demanded equal pay, shorter working hours, and the right to vote. The next year the Socialist Party of America Declared the first National Women’s day!
A year later in 1910 a woman name Claira Zetkin who was a communist activist and advocate for women’s rights proposed the idea of making the International day to a group of 100 women at the International Conference of Working women from 17 countries and they agreed to it unanimously!
Purple, Green and White are the colours to support the theme. Purple for Dignity, Green for hope and White for Purity. Apparently purity is a controversial idea but I like to think personally that maybe it means the purity of the cause!!
Women all over the globe come together to celebrate as sisters and build each other up! What a wonderful way to work towards a better world!
In China to celebrate…women are given half a day off work on March 8 as advised by the state council.
In Italy for Festa Della Donna, mimosa blossoms are given.
In the U.S. there is a Presidential proclamation honouring women’s achievements.
Over more recent years there are problems in some countries with women still fighting for basic rights and this will continue…sigh…women all over the world are trying to work together to see change and all we can do is stick together!!
I have on my Green, Purple and White, Y’all and I am here to say I am personally happy to be a woman and celebrate with others of all genders and will always include those who need help standing for their rights! Enjoy your day Sisters!
