When Is the First Day of Spring 2024?
In 2024, the March equinox happens on March 19 at 11:06 P.M. EDT. This falls on a Tuesday and is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere….this is from the Almanac!!…so tonight but still counts lolol!!!
In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox across the globe) occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. It’s called the “celestial” equator because it’s an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. Imagine standing on the equator; the Sun would pass directly overhead on its way north.
On the March equinox, the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere receive roughly equal amounts of sunlight; neither hemisphere is tilted more toward or away from the Sun than the other….Ok enough of the regular book type of stuff lol….woohoo it is officially spring!!
Do not however start your planting here in this gorgeous North Thompson Valley just yet!!! We need a month or possibly two to make sure the ground is ready for our plants…and of course we don’t want frost to get them…I personally have begun a few in little solo cups in my house…I have some sunny windows to hopefully get things going well before I put them in the garden….it is always fun playing in the dirt anyway am I right??? I think so! lol. A great day for those who are affected with S.A.D….that extra sunshine will brighten everyone’s days!! I hope you all get out and about where and when you can…or sit by a sunny window if that is possible…I did with a book yesterday afternoon…it absolutely made my whole day!! Maybe I will see you out on the trails! Cheers and again Happy Spring!!
